Layer Cake left overs - Free Quilt Pattern
Layer cakes are so beautifully co-ordinated that it is a shame not to use the left overs for a project.
I was able to make this baby quilt (39" x 49") from some left overs.
In summary the requirements are:
- Layer cake left overs (about 1/4 of a layer cake)
- 1m of background fabric
- 40cm of fabric for binding
- backing and wadding to cover 39" x 49" quilt, add margins as needed.
Other tools you will need
Cutting mat. Rotary cutter. Long ruler for use with a rotary cutter. Neutral coloured thread for sewing with - I like the Aurifil ne50 (this is a lovely fine 100% cotton thread, and I usually use a grey). General sewing supplies (thread snips, unpicker, pins, iron).
Before starting please note all seams are joined with a ¼” seam (unless otherwise indicated).
WOF - Width of Fabric
Also it is a good idea to read through all the instructions before starting.
Cutting
Aim to make 6 blocks.
If possible cut:
12 pieces at 4.5" x 8.5"
12 pieces at 4.5" square
Cut 2.5" strips - cut these into any lengths you are able - 8.5", 6.5", 4.5" and 2.5"
If you cannot get all the bigger pieces above, just cut what you can. You may end up joining 2.5" strips to make larger units.
The basic block
A - 4.5" x 8.5"
B - 4.5" x 4.5"
C - 2.5" x 2.5"
D - 2.5" x 8.5"
Use the basic block as a guide. If you don't have pieces big enough just join smaller pieces. Remember this is a quilt to use up left overs.
If you do run short of fabric just add an extra piece or two from your stash.
Sashing
From the background fabric:
Cut 3 WOF strips at 4"
Cut 4 WOF strips at 6 1/2"
Assembling the quilt
From the 4" strips, cut 3 pieces at 4" x 10 1/2"
Use this to join the blocks, the background fabric is dark in this diagram.
Make 3 sections.
Measure the width of this section, cut 2 pieces of the 4" strip to this measurement, it will be about 28".
Join the 3 sections together.
Add the borders
Measure the length of the quilt.
Cut 2 of the 6 1/2" strips to this measurement.
Add to the sides.
Measure the width of the quilt.
Cut the remaining 6 1/2" strips to this measurement.
Add to the top and bottom.
Quilt and Bind using your favourite methods.
This quilt is approx 39" x 49", I cut 5 strips of binding at 2.5".
