Charm Pack Pattern #2

Free Patterns Pattern - Quilt Quilt - Charm Pack

A charm pack. What to do?
This 'charming' lap quilt 39" x 43".

Also suitable as a baby quilt, or make 4 and it will fit a queen size bed.

In summary the requirements are:

  • 1 charm pack (40 squares at 5")
  • 1m of background fabric
  • 40cm of fabric for binding

  • backing and wadding to cover 39" x 43" square quilt, add margins as needed.

Other tools you will need

Cutting mat. Rotary cutter. Long ruler for use with a rotary cutter.  Neutral coloured thread for sewing with - I like the Aurifil ne50 (this is a lovely fine 100% cotton thread, and I usually use a grey). General sewing supplies (thread snips, unpicker, pins, iron).

Before starting please note  all seams are joined with a  ¼” seam (unless otherwise indicated)
Also it is a good idea to read through all the instructions before starting.

Cutting

Leave 25 squares as is - so you have 25 squares at 5".

Take  10 squares, cut these in half. So you now have 20 rectangles 5" x 2.5".

Sew the centre feature

Take the 25 squares and sew them together to form a large square - 5 x 5 squares.

Add the borders

Take the background fabric.

Cut a strip 5 1/2" x width of piece shown above (should be about 23"). Sew this to the top.

Cut a strip 12" x width of piece shown above (should be about 23"). Sew this to the bottom.

Take the background fabric.

Cut a strip 5 1/2" x height of above piece  (should be about 39"). Sew this to the left side.

Cut a strip 7 1/2" x height of above piece  (should be about 39"). Sew this to the right side.

The top pieced borders

Join 8 rectangles together to form a long strip.

Cut a 3 1/2" strip from the background fabric.

Join the rectangle strip and the 3' strip together.

Measure the top edge of the quilt so far, cut the pieced border to fit.

Sew the strip to the top of the quilt.

The side pieced borders

Join 10 rectangles together to form a long strip.

Measure the left side of the quilt, add this border to the quilt.

The quilt will now look like this -

Cut a 3 1/2" strip from the background fabric.(A)
Cut a 3 1/2" square from the background fabric.(B)
Cut a piece 3 1/2" x 2 1/2"  from the charm pack.(C)
Form the final strip by joining the pieces in this order: B - C - A.

Measure the left of the quilt, cut this strip to fit, cutting off the 'A' end if needed.

 Sew to the left edge.

All done bar the quilting! I like the cute birds I quilted on this one!

I think this design would suit many styles of fabric, a light background would give a completely different look. I'm looking forward to making this design in 'baby' colours.

Quilt and Bind using your favourite methods.

This quilt is approx 39"  x 43", I cut 5 strips of binding at 2.5".

Making 4 of these would  make a quilt 78" x 86" - a great size for a double bed or queen bed.
